Nature’s Got A Hold On Me. . . August 10, 2007

I don’t know what it is exactly, but I find that trees, rivers, mist and rain stir me deeply, easily moving me into a state of euphoria. It is like the Passion, a total transformation, connecting something deep within me to a timeless, endless moment somewhere back to the beginning of time and way out into the endless future.

A tingling sensation, pulsing through my body, makes me profoundly grateful to be alive right now, this very day, on this planet.

“How is it”, I think, “that I am so incredibly fortunate to be here at this moment to witness the setting sun’s metallic bronze highlight glowing brilliantly on the trunk of a young fruit tree? . . . And to delight in the spectacle of the sun’s light as it dances among the lower leaves and skirts across the delicate branches. . . Ahhhhh. Let me catch my breath!”

My favorite colors. . . August 3, 2007

Long ago I gave up mixing colors from a tube on a palette. It would drive me crazy to run out of a carefully mixed color in the middle of the painting. Thank God I somehow came across the oil pigment sticks by R&F Paints. They go on smooth, like butter. Unlike oil sticks or bars from other companies, R&F’s Pigment Sticks have the consistency and controllability of a really excellent lipstick. . .

It is important to remove the skin that forms over the surface of each stick when they’ve sat awhile and dried out. Then you can draw directly on your canvas, paper or wood surface, blend and smooth with brushes, or as I do, move the paint around on the surface with my hands (wearing rubber gloves of course).

Check out the R&F Website for inspiration and information.

Oh yes, the colors. . . Here are some of the colors I use most often:
naples yellow

brownish pink

turkey umber greenish

raw umber

brilliant extra pale yellow

neutral white

the list goes on and on. . .

News: Unveiling The Promise of Light, X August 3, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 11th marks the premier showing of the newest in Gabrielle Senza’s Promise of Light series of paintings at the Kasten Fine Art Gallery in Great Barrington, MA. On view for two days only, The Promise of Light, X will be featured August 11th and 12th, with a public reception on Saturday from 4 – 6pm.

The 6 x 10 foot oil painting was recently completed by the Berkshire based artist in her Great Barrington, Massachusetts studio. “Young trees reflecting in a crisp, calm pond are surrounded by a brilliant golden glow. The morning grove sits quietly just in front of a receding horizon of trees, behind which, the sun promises to warm its way through to a dazzling new day,” writes Senza of painting number ten in the series.

The Promise of Light series was started in 2006, when Senza was commissioned to create a 4 x 12 foot painting of the Catskill Mountains for the Philmont, NY restaurant, Local 111. “The quality of light and its effect on the distant views inspired a whole new realm to explore,” states Senza. “Mountains, rivers and trees all become actors in the play that comes to life on the canvas, offering inspiring new compositions.”

Gabrielle Senza is internationally recognized as an artist, educator, curator, and writer. She exhibits widely and has artwork in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, Fidelity Investments, Paine Webber, and in private collections around the world. One of the country’s preeminent environmental artists, Senza’s work has toured cities in the notable “Toxic Landscapes” exhibition organized in 2001 by the Puffin Foundation. She has taught at Mass MoCA, Cooper Union and Simon’s Rock College of Bard. Senza is the founder and Executive Director of the creative public arts initiative, Red Collaborative.

Drawn to Nature August 3, 2007

Drawn to Nature from a very early age,
I traced racoon tracks in the sand along the water’s edge
and drank colors from the sky.
Nature has been my mother and my teacher.
Through Nature I found Art.
Through Art, I found Salvation.
